A campaign of Tick Disease Veterinary Hospital Pet Care conducted tests on more than 200 animals. If not diagnosed early, the disease can cause meningitis and convulsions.
Dr. Carla Derl, Veterinary Pet Care , attended a very cool material of the News Journal Morning (SBT) and explained everything about the tick of the disease and what precautions must be taken with pets.
One in ten dogs have to tick the disease and the owner does not know
Campaign conducted by the Veterinary Hospital Pet Care , which examined 234 free dogs, found that one in ten animals has the tick of the disease and, in all cases, the owners did not suspect that the animal was infected. “As it is a silent disease, whose first symptoms appear when it is at a more advanced stage, the result of the campaign was important for further alertemos the owners of the importance of conducting periodic tests in dogs,” explains Dr. Carla Berl , director of the hospital network.
Of animals examined, 9.4% were positive for Ehrlichiosis or Anaplasma, and the majority (81.8%) represented only by Ehrlichiosis. That is, diseases that are transmitted by the parasite, the ehrlichiosis was the most diagnosed by veterinarians Pet Care during the campaign.
The ehrlichiosis can be a silent disease and destroy gradually, for example, bone marrow and kidneys of animals, may cause even a cause meningitis and convulsions. It is usually transmitted by ticks that have had contact with sick animals and who later settled in other animals, which is one of the main transmission factors of tick disease.
The main symptoms that dogs infected with ehrlichiosis present are fever, prostration, loss of appetite and bleeding. These symptoms may be accompanied by platelet deficiency in the animal ‘s blood, low white blood cells and red blood cells also. May still occur bloody urine, pneumonia, vomiting and diarrhea. And as the symptoms of tick sickness vary from animal to animal, it can also be confused with the distemper .
After suspecting the tick’s disease, the veterinarian must wait 21-30 days to make the collection of tests, from that diagnosis will be more accurate. This time needs to be respected, because, in most cases, the disease does not manifest itself immediately. Already the admission will occur only if the animal is diagnosed with focal seizure.
The care of the pets should be reinforced, especially in the winter as it is during this period that ticks multiply more easily. In addition, the disease can be transmitted not only in large areas of forests and land, but also in parks, pet shops, hoteizinhos or even in the very place where the animal lives.
“We can say that the best way to prevent ehrlichiosis is taking the dog or cat to the vet every year to perform the appropriate tests. Thus, the diagnosis may be obtained even before the disease manifest and being more efficient treatment, namely, early diagnosis is the best treatment “concludes the director of the Pet Care .
